World’s best basketball player is now the #1 trending hashtag in India
India is on track to overtake Australia as the country with the world’s best-performing basketball player, according to the latest data from social media analytics firm Statista.
The #1 ranking comes after a record-breaking first week for India’s national team, which beat a world record of 33,096 points by India in the 2014 FIBA World Championships in India.
The Indians were crowned the best basketball team in the world on Friday by the FIBA Basketball World Cup and won the gold medal at the London Games.
India’s team was also named best in the Asia-Pacific region for the first time since 2010, according Statista’s latest rankings.
The number of players on the Indian team increased from 31 to 34 in just two weeks and will likely rise further in coming weeks, as the team takes on the USA and the US under the banner of #Basketball4India, a hashtag trending on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
India is ranked No.1 in the rankings on social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.
India has also climbed to No.2 in the top-20 global basketball rankings, which includes the United States, according the analytics company.
India also became the first country to reach the top 50 worldwide in the FIFA rankings of world football.
The country has now overtaken the US as the world leader in the number of female basketball players, according a new report by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA).
India’s number of women on the FIBI women’s basketball world rankings rose from 20 to 27 in the past week, according Statsista.
“India is leading the way in the development of the women’s game, and this year, it will be an even bigger challenge to beat them,” said Darshan Menon, founder and CEO of Statista, which is headquartered in San Francisco.
“As more players get their first taste of the NBA, the number one ranking will surely change.”
The team’s win over Australia in London was the second time the country has reached the finals at the FIB World Cup, and it’s the team’s first medal in an Asian tournament.
It also became just the third team in history to win the gold at a FIBA event.
India, which has not participated in the FIBL since 2012, is set to face the USA on Thursday in a preliminary round match in the Women’s World Cup final.
“The team has made it clear to the FIBS that India is not just a team of basketball players but also a nation,” Menon said.
“We hope the world can see the best of India.”
The Indian team, led by top-ranked wing player Radha Nagra, is ranked in the bottom half of the FIFA world rankings.
India lost to Australia in the last four FIBA tournaments and will need to overcome the USA in order to become the first Asian nation to qualify for the 2019 FIBA Women’s Championship in Russia.
