The UK is not a safe country to be a woman: Theresa May says
UK Prime Minister Theresa May said she was not surprised by the news that the UK is no longer a safe place for women to travel as the country has been a “very safe country”.
The comments come after a string of violent attacks on women in the country.
“It’s been a very, very safe country,” Ms May told Sky News.
“If I was a man, I would be very surprised.”
She said that the government had made it a “priority” to build a safer country for women, as well as the safety of the country’s schools.
“The last 10 years, for women who have come here, we’ve built up a safety net, which is a very important point,” Ms Johnson said.
“Women have been protected, we’re able to be able to travel freely.”
And if we look at the violence against women, women have been able to go to work, to go out and be in their own community, to be in schools and in all sorts of ways be able do their work safely.
“Ms Johnson told Sky: “We are very clear that the safe environment that we have built for women is now being undermined.
“We have to make sure that our society is safe and secure for all women.”
The comments came as Ms May’s government was faced with criticism over its decision to scrap the Human Rights Act, which was in place until 2021.
Prime Minister Jeremy Corbyn, a long-time campaigner for female equality, said the move was “a terrible mistake” that “would do absolutely nothing to improve the lives of women”.
Mr Corbyn called for the repeal of the Act “as soon as possible”.
“Theresa May should have gone straight to the people of this country and said, ‘We’re not going to be doing this’,” Mr Corbyn said.
